Gnomes

[27-09-19] Prompt by u/mattmaster68: There are people that steal valuables from graves and homes, but that’s not you. Instead, you like breaking in then adding/moving things without anyone knowing.   Lisa had just come back from a lovely weekend trip, when she noticed she hadn’t locked the door before leaving. The door opened easily, without her even putting her key in the lock. It was late, the house was dark and cold. It would have been very nice to have a heavy bat on her then. She slipped into the house, but left the door momentarily open in case she’d need to make a quick escape. She held her breath and listened for any sign of movement. Nothing. She flipped a switch and the hallway was bathed in light. Nothing wrong there. She started to calm down a little. She dropped her bags on the floor and moved further into the house. She turned on the light in the living room. Dozens of gleaming black eyes stared at her. Her heart stopped. She almost screamed, but then she got...

Hair

[27-09-19] Prompt by u/everburningblue: Everyone’s hair had spontaneously fallen out. There seem to be no other strange simultaneous occurrences, but humanity is seriously weirded out.   Mark watched the passersby from his seat outside the restaurant. It was a cloudy spring day, but everyone wore hats like they were protecting their heads from the sun. Mark took a sip from his cappuccino and relaxed in his seat. He could sit here all day. Expensive caps, knitted hats, scarfs tied under the chin and even the rare bowl hat. Every type of headdress walked by his seat. One woman walked passed wearing a wig. Mark noticed a few people glare at her in envy. Mark knew it was a wig, because a week ago, everyone’s hair had just fallen off. All over the world, at the exact same time. Obviously, this resulted in a mild case of mild hysteria as everyone thought they were hit with radiation or something and were going to die, but it soon blew over, and now some people with fast growing...

The Ilnesses (original)

T

[25-09-19] This is the original version of my answer to this prompt by u/RealityScribe: There are five fatal illnesses discovered across the world. Each only may infect only one person at a time and until the illness takes the life of the afflicted, nothing else can kill them. To your horror and amazement, two of them have chosen you as their host, and neither can run their course. I made an improved version 5 days after this one which can be found here.   It was finally on the news; two of the Illnesses hadn’t been sighted in months. This had happened before of course, but in this day and age, where almost everyone was connected to the internet, it was still a newsworthy event. The last time had been when The Runner was plaguing a small village in some rainforest, and The Fever had infected some poor monastery up high in the mountains. Back then, people had talked about the Illnesses being gone for good, only to be disappointed not long after. This time… Edward...

The Illnesses (improved)

[30-09-19] This is an improved version of an earlier answer to this prompt by u/RealityScribe: There are five fatal illnesses discovered across the world. Each only may infect only one person at a time and until the illness takes the life of the afflicted, nothing else can kill them. To your horror and amazement, two of them have chosen you as their host, and neither can run their course. I originally answered it five days before, but wasn’t quite happy with how it turned out so I rewrote it.   In the safety of his own home, Edward allowed himself a proper cough. He blew his nose long and hard, relishing in the way his airway cleared. It’d been a long day. He turned on the television. The newslady looked grave as she continued her story. “It’s been two months since the last Infected died. We urge everyone to report any sightings of people showing the Symptoms. It’s a matter of national security.” So it was finally on the news. Edward would have to be extra careful from now...
